ISN Amsterdam proudly presents: our very first Theme Night, the North & South America Night! Although this event is mainly organised for international students coming from either North or South America and Dutch students going there for their exchange, everyone is welcome! During this event, you’ll have the chance to meet students and exchange stories about your countries, eat some typical North & South American food, play games and listen to some really interesting guest lectures!

– GUEST LECTURE 1: Dr. V.D. Mamadouh, professor at the UvA (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and GPIO: Geographies of Globalizations)
Short lecture about the geographical imaginations and geopolitical representations of the relations between Europe, North America and Latin America as a background for the new situation emerging with the Trump administration.

– GUEST LECTURE 2: Dr. P.T. van Rooden, professor at the UvA (Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and Programme group: Globalising Culture and the Quest for Belonging)
Short lecture on religion and politics in America and how this possibly could change under President Trump.

– GUEST LECTURE 3: Bas Dikmans (Cultural Anthropologist and Latin Americanist) who did his MA research on Facebook memes and online humor in Mexico. Short lecture on how Mexican politics is seen by the younger and more digital part of society, discussing the infamous Trump wall from a Mexican perspective.

– GUEST LECTURE 4: Luis Fernando de Jesús Reyes Escate (Social Anthropologist) who did his MA research on perceptions of blackness and ‘mestizaje’ in Peruvian and Bolivian society. Departing from his experiences during fieldwork he seeks to establish a dialogue between academic and daily views on race and miscegenation.

– GUEST LECTURE 5: Gaya Nikolsky, did her BA on sustainable agriculture in the Amazon region and the implication that come with the internationalization of Global Value Chain. She is currently doing her MA about capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art and its impact in modern urban Brazil. She’ll talk about these relevant themes and has been on exchange to Brazil herself, so she’ll probably have some experiences to share!

The evening will take place at Nieuwe Achtergracht 166, REC C room C1.01. Please sign up using this sheet (otherwise you won’t be guaranteed a spot): https://goo.gl/forms/F0tThCiwgTOR0SIC2
