Culture in Action with Alejandro Zambra

Dit programma staat in het teken van de Chileense schrijver Alejandro Zambra, die wordt beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste Latijns- Amerikaanse auteurs van zijn generatie. Zambra, die opgroeide tijdens de dictatuur van Pinochet, stelt in zijn werk de complexe positie van de tweede generatie centraal. Hoe eigen je als tweede generatie je de geschiedenis toe? Veertig jaar na de coup van Pinochet gaat dichter en presentator Wim Brands met Zambra in gesprek over het continue spanningsveld tussen de eerste en tweede generatie en herinneren als morele verantwoordelijkheid.

Zambra publiceert verhalen, poëzie, essays en internationaal bekroonde romans waaronder Bonsai en Het verborgen leven van bomen. Zijn laatste roman is in Zuid-Amerika met lovende recensies onthaald.

Schrijfster Maartje Wortel verzorgt tijdens dit programma een inleiding op het werk van Zambra.

Culture in Action: Prince Claus Awards Week

Van 9 t/m 13 december organiseert het Prins Claus Fonds in samenwerking met De Balie ‘Culture in Action: Prince Claus Awards Week’. Ter gelegenheid van de Prins Claus Awards 2013 zijn voor het eerst alle elf laureaten in Amsterdam. Culture in Action biedt een unieke kans deze baanbrekende kunstenaars en denkers uit de hele wereld te ontmoeten. De laureaten worden met de Prins Claus Prijs geëerd omdat zij door hun artistieke en innovatieve culturele uitingen positieve verandering bewerkstelligen in hun omgeving.

Alejandro Zambra is considered one of the most important Latin American authors of his generation. The young writer grew up in dictator Pinochet’s Chile. His work centres around the complex position of the second generation and Zambra reflects on the inheritance of that painful history. Forty years after Pinochet’s dictatorship, Wim Brands interviews Zambra on the complex relationship between the first and second generation and remembering as a moral act.

Zambra has published stories, poetry, essays and is the author of the international award-winning novels Bonsai and The Private Lives of Trees.  Dutch author Maartje Wortel will give an introduction to the work of Alejandro Zambra during this programme.
